The AI tools that genuinely help an Indian site engineer in 2026 are mostly free and already on your phone: ChatGPT or Gemini for drafting letters and checking calculations, Gboard voice typing in Hindi for site notes, Google Translate's offline Hindi pack for moving between English drawings and a Hindi-speaking crew. One layer up, India-built site apps — Onsite, Trackovo, Powerplay — are adding AI that compiles DPRs and flags cost overruns, all demo-gated. The enterprise tier (reality-capture cameras, AI safety CCTV, schedule optimisers) starts around $10,000 a year and is priced for someone else's project. This guide sorts the market into what you can start using this week, what needs a sales call, and what to skip — with prices where vendors actually publish them.

The quick answer: one tool per job#

The free layer: AI already on your phone#

Five tools cost nothing and cover most of what a site engineer would actually use AI for.

ChatGPT (free tier). Free text chat is effectively uncapped as of August 2026 (reported), and file uploads work on the free plan — OpenAI's official supported-file list covers XLSX, XLS, CSV, DOCX, PPTX, PDF and TXT (OpenAI help). CAD formats are absent from that list: ChatGPT cannot read a DWG. Standard voice mode is unlimited; the newer advanced voice mode has a daily cap OpenAI does not publish. Before you upload anything, apply the data rule from our tested prompt library for civil engineers: nothing client-confidential, nothing you would not email outside the company.

Google Gemini (free tier). Gemini's free tier covers text, voice and image queries. The paid Google AI Plus plan launched in India at ₹199/month promotional, rising to ₹399/month (reported), with Jio users getting a long free window on the Pro tier (reported). For drafting and checking work, free Gemini and free ChatGPT are interchangeable — the prompt matters more than the model.

Gboard voice typing (Hindi). Gboard dictates in Hindi — Devanagari or Hinglish transliteration — and the Hindi pack can be downloaded for offline use. One caveat worth knowing: Gboard's newer AI voice-editing commands ("fix it", voice-driven edits) officially support only six languages — English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish — and Hindi is not among them (Google's Gboard help page). Basic Hindi dictation works; AI-assisted voice editing does not.

WhatsApp voice-message transcripts. Transcription runs entirely on-device and is end-to-end encrypted (WhatsApp's announcement). Hindi availability on Android is genuinely unclear — public reports conflict, and WhatsApp's own post names no languages. Check Settings → Chats → Voice message transcripts on your phone; if Hindi appears, a foreman's two-minute voice note becomes pasteable text for the DPR.

Google Translate (offline Hindi). The Hindi pack is officially downloadable for offline use (Google Translate help) — useful mid-site with no signal, translating a specification clause for a crew or a supplier message for a client email.

AI for the daily progress report#

The DPR is the most automatable document a site engineer produces — it is structured, repetitive, and assembled from data the site already generates. We compared the four ways to get AI into your DPR (free phone stack, dictation, dedicated tools, and doing nothing) on our DPR software page; here is the tool landscape as of September 2026.

Article table: Tool What the AI actually does India fit Pricing Onsite
ToolWhat the AI actually doesIndia fitPricing
Onsite AICompiles the DPR from attendance, progress and material entries; flags cost overruns against BOQ; suggests next-day labour; drafts POsBuilt for India/Gulf; app in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, MarathiDemo-gated, none published
TrackovoPhone-first DPR in ~3 minutes with Hinglish voice notes and offline queuing — structured capture more than visible AI processingBuilt for India, works on a ₹9,000 AndroidDemo-gated, none published
Powerplay AI WorkforceFive AI agents for estimation, procurement, supplier qualification, forecasting, compliance — office-side, not field DPRIndia (launched March 2026)Outcome-based, none published (reported)
Procore AI Daily LogTurns field photos, notes and audio into draft daily logs for human verificationGlobal enterprise platformBundled in Procore, none published
RakenVoice-to-text across daily reports, time cards, checklistsUS-centricQuote only, none published

Two honest observations. First, every dedicated tool in this table is demo-gated — not one publishes a price a small contractor can budget against. Second, Onsite AI's published feature list is the most concrete India-specific AI offering we found: DPR compilation reviewable in under two minutes, daily cost-overrun projections against the BOQ, and next-day labour recommendations from the schedule-vs-progress gap. If your company already runs a site app, ask that vendor what AI it has shipped; if you run WhatsApp and Excel, the free layer above plus ten minutes of prompting gets you a drafted DPR today.

AI quantity takeoff and BOQ — the short version#

Takeoff is where AI construction tools are most mature, and where we have written the most: the full comparison lives in our AI BOQ generator guide and the best AI construction software listicle. The compressed version: Kreo publishes real self-serve pricing ($35–175/user/month), Togal.AI is $299/user/month on US-format drawings, and India-marketed tools like DesignDrafter publish no pricing. SiteSetu's own drawing-to-BOQ service takes the concierge route: AI drafts the takeoff, a civil engineer verifies it, and every quantity stays traceable to length × breadth × depth in IS 1200 measurement conventions with DSR-aligned items.

For a site engineer the takeoff question is less "which AI" and more "who signs". Whatever drafts your quantities, payment still flows from what is recorded in the measurement book and check-measured up the chain — an AI draft is a starting point for that record, not a replacement.

The enterprise tier: know it exists, skip it for now#

These tools are real and the AI is often genuinely good — the pricing and prerequisites are simply built for large-project budgets.

  • OpenSpace (360° AI photo documentation): $10,000/year minimum, stated on its own SMB pricing page. Priced off your annual construction volume.
  • DroneDeploy (drone mapping + AI): reported $329–599/user/year on review sites, with conflicting higher figures — no clean published price.
  • Buildots (helmet-camera progress vs BIM): quote-only, and assumes a BIM model most Indian mid-market projects do not have.
  • viAct / Intenseye (AI safety on CCTV): quote-only enterprise sales; we found no documented flagship deployment on an Indian project for either, and no India-focused CCTV-AI safety vendor with published pricing. That is a genuine market gap, not an oversight in your research.
  • ALICE Technologies / nPlan (AI scheduling): reported $50,000–150,000/year for ALICE; nPlan prices against portfolio value. Both are P6-ecosystem tools for owners and megaproject GCs.

If a vendor in this tier approaches your project, the questions that matter are Indian-site questions: does it work on our connectivity, who maintains the cameras/capture discipline, and what happens to the output when the site team is measured on progress, not data quality.

What AI still cannot do on site#

A clear-eyed list, because the failure modes are where careers get hurt.

  • It cannot sign. Measurement liability is structural: bills are paid from recorded, check-measured quantities, and the recording engineer is accountable. No AI output enters that chain until a person signs it in.
  • It cannot read your drawings. ChatGPT does not support DWG, and vision models mis-read dimensioned drawings often enough that our prompt-library teardown treats drawing measurement as a failed use case.
  • It invents IS clauses. Language models confidently cite clause numbers that do not exist. Verify every code reference against the actual standard — our IS 1200 guide exists partly because AI answers about deduction rules are so often wrong.
  • It cannot hold safety accountability. AI CCTV flags a missing harness; the site engineer still owns the response, the toolbox talk, and the consequence.

How many engineers actually use AI?#

The best available data is global, not Indian. RICS's 2025 Artificial Intelligence in Construction report (2,200+ professionals surveyed) found 45% reporting no AI use at all, 34% in early pilots, about 12% using it regularly in specific processes, and under 2% using it across multiple processes. Top barriers: lack of skilled personnel (46%), integration challenges (37%), data quality (30%), implementation cost (29%). No India-construction-specific adoption survey exists yet from NASSCOM, EY or RICS — the India numbers you see quoted elsewhere are usually all-enterprise figures, not construction.

The practical read: if you learn the free layer now — prompting, voice workflows, AI-drafted documents you verify — you are ahead of roughly four in five practitioners globally, at zero cost. Whether that compounds into career safety is the subject of our honest look at whether AI will replace quantity surveyors in India.

Where SiteSetu fits — honestly#

SiteSetu is not an AI site assistant, and this page would be worse if we pretended otherwise. What we actually offer a site engineer: a drawing-to-BOQ service where AI drafts and a civil engineer verifies against IS 1200 and DSR conventions, and a site app for structured DPR, material and attendance records. What we do not have: voice-to-DPR AI, CCTV analytics, or schedule optimisation. If those are what you need today, the vendors above — with the pricing caveats above — are where to look.

FAQs#

What is the best AI tool for a site engineer in India?#

Start with the free layer: ChatGPT or Gemini for drafting and checking, Gboard Hindi voice typing for notes, Google Translate offline for language switching. They cost nothing, work on the phone you already carry, and cover documents, calculations and communication — the tasks AI is actually good at. Add a dedicated tool only when a specific workflow (DPR compilation, takeoff) justifies a demo call.

Can AI write my DPR in Hindi?#

Partly. Gboard dictates in Hindi, and ChatGPT/Gemini can restructure that dictation into a DPR format in Hindi or English. Onsite's app runs in Hindi and its AI module compiles DPRs from site entries. What does not exist yet: a published-price, India-focused tool that turns a Hindi voice note directly into a finished DPR without human assembly.

Can ChatGPT read construction drawings?#

No. DWG is not on OpenAI's supported file list, and PDF drawing uploads are read as images with error rates too high for measurement work. Use AI takeoff tools built for drawings, or a verified service — and keep the measurement book as the record that actually gets paid.

Do AI safety cameras make sense for a small Indian contractor?#

Not yet. viAct and Intenseye sell enterprise deployments with no published pricing, and we found no documented flagship Indian project for either. For a small contractor, trained supervision and enforced PPE discipline remain the working answer; revisit AI CCTV when a vendor publishes India pricing.

Will AI replace site engineers?#

The evidence says the role changes rather than disappears: measurement, certification and safety accountability stay human because liability chains require signatures, not model outputs. RICS's position is that AI assists professional practice rather than replacing it. Our full analysis — task-by-task, with the automation history of measurement work — is in Will AI replace quantity surveyors in India?

Is Gemini or ChatGPT better for construction site work?#

For free-tier site use they are functionally equivalent: both draft well, both calculate adequately with verification, both mis-cite IS codes. Gemini's paid India pricing (₹199–399/month, reported) undercuts ChatGPT Plus; ChatGPT has the larger prompt-sharing ecosystem. Pick either and spend the saved money on nothing — the free tiers are enough to learn on.
