Primary vs secondary TMT: dated category references
In Delhi, the source reported primary steel at ₹64.7/kg on 17 Oct 2026 (Fe 550D, 12–32 mm) and secondary steel at ₹50.8/kg on 19 Oct 2026 (Rerolling Fe 500, 12–25 mm). Grades, sizes and dates differ, so the gap is not a brand premium.
The source calls the second category “rerolling”; we list it as secondary. It names no brands. For a brand comparison, get quotes for the same grade, size and date.

Buy the grade your structural drawings specify. The TMT bar grades and IS 1786 guide explains the grades and their markings. A price category says nothing about compliance.
Convert per kg to per tonne, then price the quantity
Check nominal kg per metre and per 12 m bar in the unit weight of steel chart.
Multiply ₹/kg by 1,000 to get ₹/tonne, then multiply billed kg by ₹/kg for the material value.
₹/kg = ₹/tonne ÷ 1,000
Material value = billed kg × ₹/kg
Using the Delhi observation of 19 Oct 2026: ₹51,000/tonne ÷ 1,000 = ₹51/kg. An illustrative 2.5-tonne order is 2,500 kg × ₹51 = ₹1,27,500 before GST. At 18%, material GST is ₹22,950 and the subtotal is ₹1,50,450. Loading, freight and processing remain to be quoted.
To get the kg, use the steel calculator and TMT bar weight table or a bar bending schedule. Keep each diameter separate in the order, because dealers may charge size extras. For steel quantities measured from your full drawing set, get a BOQ from drawings.
GST, loading, transport and cutting/bending
GST on TMT and other iron or non-alloy steel bars and rods (HSN 7213–7215) is 18%, under Schedule II of Notification 9/2025 — Integrated Tax (Rate), dated 17 Sept 2025, effective 22 Sept 2025. The price tables show whether each source already includes it; do not add it twice.
- Loading and unloading: not stated by the city source. Agree who provides labour or lifting and where the dealer’s responsibility ends.
- Transport: ask for the charge to your site PIN code, per vehicle load, and any waiting charge.
- Cutting and bending: confirm whether you are buying straight bars or processed steel, and whether the charge is per kg, tonne or lot. Record whose account receives reusable offcuts and scrap.
- Other goods: binding wire, couplers and chairs are not included in a bare TMT price unless the quote explicitly includes them.
How to check a dealer quote
Get the quote in writing, with material, GST, freight and processing as separate lines.
- Write the manufacturer, grade, diameter-wise quantity, bar length and delivery location on the request.
- Ask for the date, validity, payment terms and stock status in writing.
- Convert every quote to the same unit before comparing. Do not rank quotes whose inclusions you do not know.
- Match mill/test documentation and bar identification to the approved specification. Confirm the agreed weighing and shortage-resolution procedure.
- At receipt, reconcile the delivery challan, weighbridge slip, purchase order and invoice. Record rejected bars and returns separately.
A lower rate helps only if steel reconciles
A purchase rate prices incoming steel; it does not prove the quantity installed. Track opening stock + receipts − returns/transfers − closing stock as net site consumption. Compare that with BBS-based installed quantities, measured scrap and reusable offcuts; investigate the balance rather than calling every difference wastage.
Illustrative check: 1,000 kg opening + 5,000 kg received − 200 kg transferred − 800 kg closing = 5,000 kg consumed. If 4,800 kg is supported by the BBS and 150 kg by measured scrap, 50 kg remains unexplained. At an illustrative ₹50/kg, that difference is ₹2,500 before tax.
Use the material reconciliation statement guide. For measurement records, BBS and RA-bill support, see the construction billing desk.

Steel bought vs steel in the drawings

One Delhi site bought 104.5 t of steel against 78.9 t needed by its drawings, including estimated items and 2% cutting loss. Comparing the BBS with the purchase bills, size by size, showed the 25.6 t gap.

Methodology and source dates
We check free public sources by hand. Each price keeps the date its source gives for that rate, not the date we found it. “Listed” is a seller’s advertised price; “reported” is a market publisher’s reference rate. Unit conversions keep the source’s GST basis, and a row shows a range only when its source publishes one. We have not verified any sale or dealer quote. Prices dated more than 7 days before the check are marked as older references and left out of the summary range. The summary range is the lowest and highest of the recent prices shown, not an India-wide average. The tables change only when we re-check the sources by hand. The trend chart adds dated readings from a weekly scripted check of the same sources, reviewed before it is published.

What we could not verify
- No verified brand-specific primary-versus-secondary price matrix for the same city, grade, size and date.
- No current usable public PSU/SAIL or PWD retail price circular was established in this review. Schedule rates are not substituted for market quotes.
- Ayron Mart does not identify primary/secondary class; those city prices remain unclassified.
Frequently asked questions
What is the steel rate today per kg?
TMT steel costs about ₹45.2–₹53.5 per kg (₹45,200–₹53,500 per tonne) excluding GST in reported city prices checked on 20 Oct 2026. That covers 12 mm TMT in 15 cities. GST on steel bars is 18%, which makes it about ₹53.34–₹63.13 per kg before freight and loading. The source names no brand or grade, and these are market-city rates, not delivered-to-site prices.
How do I convert TMT price per kg to per tonne?
One metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Multiply ₹/kg by 1,000 for ₹/tonne; divide ₹/tonne by 1,000 for ₹/kg. For example, an illustrative ₹50/kg is ₹50,000/tonne, on the same tax and delivery basis.
Are primary and secondary steel prices directly comparable?
Only for the same grade, diameter, date, tax basis and delivery terms. The Delhi category rates here differ in grade and size range, so their gap is not a like-for-like brand premium. Secondary is the source’s rerolling category, not a quality rating.
Does the TMT rate include GST, loading or transport?
The city rates exclude GST, and no source here states loading, freight or cutting and bending. The Delhi primary and secondary rates do not state their GST basis. Ask the dealer to quote each item as a separate line.
Can I use a per-piece quote as a per-kg price?
Divide the piece price by its verified billed weight. Confirm bar length, diameter, nominal versus actual weight and rounding. A weight calculated from diameter is an estimate; use the agreed weighing basis for purchase and reconciliation.
Are these prices updated every day?
No. We re-check the public sources by hand, and each price shows its own source date. A weekly check adds dated readings to the trend chart. Get a written dealer quote before you buy.
