Convert brick price and count per m³ or sq ft

Divide the price per 1,000 by 1,000 for the price per brick: ₹8,120 ÷ 1,000 = ₹8.12. Multiply by the whole number of bricks you need.

₹8.12 per brick · 527.0092 pieces per solid m³, excluding joints.

8.6755 pieces per sq ft at the selected thickness and joint. For 100 sq ft: round 867.5504 up to 868 pieces × ₹8.12 = ₹7,048.16.

The starting rate is one listed price from the table. Changing the size keeps your rate; it does not look up a price for that size. No wastage, openings, labour or jointing material is added.

For openings, cutting and your wall schedule, use the brick calculator.

Calculated counts, rounded here to four decimals. No cutting or breakage allowance.
Size / wall thicknessPieces per solid m³Pieces per wall m³ with jointsPieces per sq ft of wall

230 × 110 × 75 mm brick; 230 mm wall; 10 mm joints527.0092408.49678.7286

A 230 × 110 × 75 mm brick gives 527 bricks per solid m³, or 408.5 per m³ of brickwork with 10 mm joints. A 190 × 90 × 90 mm modular brick with 10 mm joints gives exactly 500 per m³.

AAC vs red brick vs fly ash: cost of 100 sq ft of wall

For 100 sq ft of wall at these Chennai prices, the blocks or bricks alone cost ₹6,992 for a 200 mm AAC wall (GST included), ₹7,048.16 for a 9 inch fly-ash brick wall and ₹9,218.16 for a 9 inch chamber red brick wall (both before GST).

100 sq ft = 9.290304 m² exactly. AAC uses a 600 × 200 mm face and 3 mm joints: 9.290304 ÷ (0.603 × 0.203) = 75.8955959… blocks, rounded up once to 76. The brick wall is 228.6 mm thick, so its volume is 9.290304 × 0.2286 = 2.1237634944 m³. Assume 230 × 110 × 75 mm bricks with 10 mm joints: 2.1237634944 ÷ (0.240 × 0.120 × 0.085) = 867.5504470… bricks, rounded up to 868.

The fly-ash seller lists 230 × 110 × 75 mm. The red-brick seller gives only “about 9 × 4 × 3 inch”, so we assume the same size for red bricks; measure the bricks you receive and recalculate.

  • Adhesive or mortar: extra, not priced here. The joints are counted in the piece numbers.
  • Transport: extra for this AAC listing. Brick prices already use the seller’s full-lorry delivery assumption. A small 100 sq ft order may not qualify; AAC has a 500-block minimum.
  • Labour, unloading, cutting, breakage, bands, mesh and plaster: extra, and not compared here.

Ask your engineer to approve the wall type and thickness before substituting materials. A 200 mm AAC wall and a 228.6 mm brick wall are not automatically equivalent designs.

Building Needs

GST on clay and fly ash bricks

Clay building bricks and fly-ash bricks attract 12% GST. Notification 14/2025 — Integrated Tax (Rate), dated 17 September 2025, effective 22 September 2025, lists fly-ash bricks and blocks at entry 1 (HSN 6815) and building bricks at entry 3 (HSN 6904 10 00).

The Ministry of Finance’s 18 September 2025 FAQ, question 6 says the special composition scheme for bricks is unchanged, so check which rate your seller bills. Where a price already includes GST, do not add it again.

Buying checks: size, strength and the correct IS standard

Before comparing prices, get the strength class, metric size and batch test report in writing. A product name or colour does not prove compliance.

Clay: IS 1077:1992 covers common burnt clay building bricks. BIS’s laboratory scope lists dimensions (6.1), tolerances (6.2), compressive strength (7.1), water absorption (7.2) and efflorescence (7.3). Ask for a numerical strength class; “first class”, “chamber” and “country” are not interchangeable test results.

Fly ash: the BIS product manual for IS 12894:2002, pulverized fuel ash-lime bricks lists dimensions and tolerances (5.1–5.2), compressive strength (7.1), drying shrinkage (7.2), efflorescence (7.3) and water absorption (7.4). Confirm composition and the applicable standard; do not apply an ash-lime standard to every product sold as a fly-ash brick.

  1. Write the exact metric size and strength/density requirement on the order; avoid inch labels alone.
  2. Get the quantity, minimum load, rate validity, HSN, tax, freight and unloading charges in writing.
  3. Agree how broken pieces, shortages and rejected batches are recorded and replaced.
  4. Measure delivered pieces, reconcile the challan with accepted stock and keep the batch documents. Arrange the specified tests; a visual or ringing check alone does not prove strength.

Red brick methodology and source dates

We check free public sources by hand. Each price keeps the date its source gives for that rate, not the date we found it. “Listed” is a seller’s advertised price; “reported” is a market publisher’s reference rate. Unit conversions keep the source’s GST basis, and a row shows a range only when its source publishes one. We have not verified any sale or dealer quote. Prices dated more than 7 days before the check are marked as older references and left out of the summary range. The summary range is the lowest and highest of the recent prices shown, not an India-wide average. The tables change only when we re-check the sources by hand. These materials are hand-checked weekly; no trend chart is published. Summary ranges keep tax bases separate. AAC m³ prices divide the source piece price by its stated block volume, without rounding the block count.

  • M&B Chetty — 21 Oct 2026; Chennai, Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, Avadi, Tiruvallur, Sriperumbudur, Tambaram; ₹ per 1,000 bricks; listed.

What we could not verify

  • Seven Tamil Nadu cities/towns from one supplier; no India-wide or independent multi-dealer survey. Delivery figures are the seller’s full-lorry estimates, not completed sales.
  • Chamber and country brick sizes are approximate trade dimensions, and no compressive-strength class or batch test result was supplied. Do not equate “chamber” with an IS strength class.
  • No verified freight, unloading, breakage allowance or mortar price for an actual order. The worked wall example uses explicitly assumed metric dimensions. No price trend is published.

Frequently asked questions

What is the brick price today?

Red bricks cost ₹8.80–₹10.91 each (₹8,800–₹10,910 per 1,000) and fly ash bricks ₹8.12–₹8.41 each (₹8,120–₹8,410 per 1,000), delivered on a full lorry, before GST. These are one seller’s listings for seven Chennai-area cities and towns, confirmed 21 Oct 2026. The lower red-brick price is for hand-moulded country bricks; chamber bricks cost more. Neither listing states a strength class.

What is the fly ash brick price per 1,000?

₹8,120–₹8,410 per 1,000 before GST, delivered on a full lorry, for 230 × 110 × 75 mm bricks. That is ₹8.12–₹8.41 per brick. No strength class is stated.

How many red bricks are needed for 100 sq ft of 9 inch wall?

About 868 bricks of 230 × 110 × 75 mm with 10 mm joints, before cutting and breakage. 100 sq ft is 9.2903 m², so a 9 inch (228.6 mm) wall is 9.2903 × 0.2286 = 2.1238 m³. Each brick with its joints takes 0.240 × 0.120 × 0.085 = 0.002448 m³; 2.1238 ÷ 0.002448 = 867.6, rounded up to 868. The red-brick seller gives only an approximate size, so measure the bricks first.

Does a cheaper fly ash brick mean a cheaper finished wall?

Not by itself. Compare the same wall: strength class, size, thickness, mortar, labour, delivery, breakage and plaster. The worked example below prices the bricks only.

What GST applies to red bricks and fly ash bricks?

12%. Notification 14/2025 — Integrated Tax (Rate), effective 22 September 2025, lists building bricks (HSN 6904 10 00, entry 3) and fly-ash bricks and blocks (HSN 6815, entry 1) at 12%. The Finance Ministry says the special composition scheme for bricks is unchanged, so check which rate your seller bills.

Which IS standards should I check?

IS 1077 for common burnt clay bricks and IS 12894 for pulverized fuel ash-lime bricks. Ask for the size, strength class and batch test results under the right standard. Trade names like chamber, country or first class are not strength grades.

Are these brick prices updated daily?

No. We check the sources by hand every week, and each row shows the seller’s own confirmation date. Get a written delivered quote for your quantity.
