Brick calculator: how many bricks for a wall or a house
A 1,000 sq ft ground-floor house needs about 8,400 bricks, and 1 cum of brickwork takes 494 conventional bricks by the CPWD allowance. A 9 inch wall takes about 10.6 bricks per sq ft. Enter your floor area below for the house, or measure a single wall further down.

Conventional bricks at the CPWD allowance of 494 per cum, which covers breakage. Plaster is extra; the cement calculator covers it.
Bricks for a house, by size
RCC-framed house, 9 inch outer and 4.5 inch inner walls, conventional bricks. Built-up area is per floor.
| Built-up a floor | G | G+1 | G+2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 600 sq ft | 5,000 | 10,100 | 15,100 |
| 800 sq ft | 6,700 | 13,400 | 20,200 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 8,400 | 16,800 | 25,200 |
| 1,200 sq ft | 10,100 | 20,200 | 30,200 |
| 1,500 sq ft | 12,600 | 25,200 | 37,800 |
Bricks per wall area
Per sq ft and per sq m of wall face, before deducting openings.
| Wall | Conventional, per sq ft | Conventional, per sq m | Modular, per sq m |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 inch (230 mm) | 10.6 | 114 | 105 |
| 4.5 inch (115 mm) | 5.3 | 57 | 53 |
Modular walls are drawn 200 mm and 100 mm, so their per-sq-m figures use those thicknesses. Conventional counts use the CPWD allowance of 494 per cum; modular counts use about 525 per cum.

Pure geometry with 10 mm joints gives about 408 conventional (230×110×75 mm) or 500 modular bricks per m³. Schedules allow more for breakage and cut bricks (CPWD DAR: 494 conventional per m³), so with a schedule figure add no further wastage. Here, 5% wastage is typical; use 10% for poor-quality bricks.

Frequently asked questions
How many bricks are needed for a 1,000 sq ft house?
About 8,400 conventional bricks for a 1,000 sq ft ground-floor RCC-framed house with 9 inch outer and 4.5 inch inner walls, or about 8.4 per sq ft of built-up area. A G+1 house of 1,000 sq ft a floor needs about 16,800. Your plan's wall lengths and openings decide the real count.
How many bricks are in 1 cubic metre of brickwork?
CPWD DAR allows 494 conventional bricks per cum, which already covers breakage and cut bricks; pure geometry with 10 mm joints gives about 440 for 225 × 111 × 70 mm bricks. Modular bricks (190 × 90 × 90 mm) come to about 500 per cum, or 525 with 5% added.
How many bricks per sq ft of 9 inch wall?
About 10.6 conventional bricks per sq ft of 9 inch (230 mm) wall face, and about 5.3 for a 4.5 inch (115 mm) wall, at the CPWD allowance. Deduct door and window openings first.
How much cement and sand does 1 cum of brickwork need?
About 1.25 bags of cement and 0.27 cum (9.45 cft) of sand for 1 cum of 9 inch brickwork in cement mortar 1:6, which uses about 0.25 cum of mortar.
Why do brick counts from different sources disagree?
Brick size and the allowance. Pure geometry gives the bricks that fit in the wall; schedules such as CPWD DAR and state SORs add an allowance for breakage and cut bricks. Use one or the other, not both, and check the brick size in your area.
How do I get the exact brick count for my house?
From a BOQ measured from your drawings: every wall by length, height and thickness, with the IS 1200 deductions for openings and lintels. These estimates use typical wall quantities for a house.
Need the exact brick count?
Send your drawings and we measure every wall with the opening deductions, and send bricks, cement and sand in an Excel BOQ. BOQs start from ₹2,500 per project.
