What the sand and aggregate rates cover

They cover Chennai, Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, Avadi, Tiruvallur, Sriperumbudur and Tambaram, from two suppliers. All seven tonne prices come from one supplier’s city table (M&B Chetty), so the differences between locations are its transport charges, not separate local markets.

M&B Chetty’s tonne rates are for a full load of about 18 tonnes, with GST and delivery included and royalty extra. Building Needs quotes per 100 cft in Chennai, GST included, transport extra, from one unit. A tonne price and a 100 cft price are different units; this page does not convert one into the other.

M-sand price by city

M-sand is ₹1,019–₹1,197 per tonne delivered across the seven locations, and ₹5,800 per 100 cft in Chennai from Building Needs.

P-sand price: washed plastering sand

P-sand is ₹1,076–₹1,255 per tonne delivered, and ₹6,500 per 100 cft in Chennai from Building Needs.

River sand price by city

River sand is ₹9,407–₹9,816 per 100 cft delivered, before 5% GST, from one supplier’s city table.

20 mm aggregate price: jalli / blue metal

20 mm jalli is ₹1,113–₹1,292 per tonne delivered, and ₹5,200 per 100 cft in Chennai from Building Needs.

10 mm aggregate price: dated quote not verified

There is no 10 mm price on this page. Neither supplier lists 10 mm; they sell 6 mm, 12 mm, 20 mm and larger sizes, and we do not use those in its place. Ask the quarry for its 10 mm grading, sieve results and a dated written rate.

Convert sand price per cft, brass and m³

Divide a price per brass (100 cft) by 100 for the price per cft, then multiply by 35.3147 for the price per m³. Building Needs lists Chennai M-sand at ₹5,800 per 100 cft: ₹5,800 ÷ 100 = ₹58 per cft, and ₹58 × 35.3147 = ₹2,048.25 per m³, still GST included and transport extra.

Worked order: 3 brass = 300 cft. At ₹5,800 per brass, the material costs 3 × ₹5,800 = ₹17,400, GST included; add the transport quote. Do not use a volume price to reprice a load bought by the tonne.

Work out the quantity first with the sand calculator or aggregate calculator. The converter adds no bulking, compaction or wastage allowance.

GST on sand and stone aggregate

Natural sand under HSN 2505 attracts 5% GST: Schedule I, entry 166. Stone aggregate under HSN 2517 attracts 5%: Schedule I, entry 182. See CBIC-hosted Notification 9/2025 — Integrated Tax (Rate), dated 17 September 2025, effective 22 September 2025, PDF pages 12–13.

M-sand and P-sand are crushed stone, so they may fall under HSN 2517 rather than 2505. Both entries are 5%, but check the HSN on the invoice. The tables keep each seller’s stated GST basis.

Later amendments, Notification 19/2025 (31 December 2025) and Notification 01/2026 (30 April 2026) with its 6 May 2026 corrigendum, do not change these entries. Where a price already includes GST, do not add it again.

Buying checks: IS 383 and the delivered load

Ask for test results for the source and batch, and check every load on arrival. The BIS product manual for IS 383:2016, which covers fine and coarse aggregate for concrete, lists size and grading under clause 6, particle shape under 5.3, and crushing, impact and abrasion values under 5.4.1, 5.4.2 and 5.4.3. Match the grading to your approved mix.

• Specify the sand source, washing, grading zone and moisture condition; “M-sand” alone is not a test result.
• For coarse aggregate, state nominal size and whether the order is single-size or graded. A 12 mm trade label is not proof of a 10 mm product.
• P-sand is sold for plastering. IS 383 covers concrete aggregate, not plaster sand, so check P-sand against the project’s plaster-sand specification (IS 1542 covers sand for plaster).
• Record actual weight on a weighbridge for tonne purchases. For volume purchases, agree the body measurement, loading level and moisture/bulking allowance before dispatch.
• Ask for permits, invoice HSN, royalty, delivery and unloading scope. Photograph and reconcile the accepted load before it is mixed with existing stock.

Methodology and M-sand sources

We check free public sources by hand. Each price keeps the date its source gives for that rate, not the date we found it. “Listed” is a seller’s advertised price; “reported” is a market publisher’s reference rate. Unit conversions keep the source’s GST basis, and a row shows a range only when its source publishes one. We have not verified any sale or dealer quote. Prices dated more than 7 days before the check are marked as older references and left out of the summary range. The summary range is the lowest and highest of the recent prices shown, not an India-wide average. The tables change only when we re-check the sources by hand. No trend chart is published for these materials. Source units and tax bases stay separate, and no tonne price is converted to volume.
