Tile Calculator: Tiles, Boxes, Adhesive and Grout

A 12 × 10 ft room needs 35 tiles of 600 × 600 mm, or 9 boxes of 4, with a 10% cutting allowance; with 100 mm skirting from the same tile, buy 10 boxes. Enter your rooms in feet or metres for tiles, boxes, adhesive bags, grout and cost.

Manufacturer data and India rates checked 20 October 2026. Add several rooms, wall dado and skirting; every rate is editable.

Room-wise tiles and flooring calculator

One tile SKU and fixing system per calculation. Pool rooms with the same size, shade and batch. Run separately for different floor and wall tiles.

Room 1
Optional wall dado and openings

Enter combined wall lengths at one height. Deduct openings by area. Add these wall stretches to “walls without skirting” above to avoid counting both finishes.

Tile, pattern and joints

The ft presets are exact imperial sizes; shop labels “2 × 2” often mean 600 × 600 mm. Imperial box defaults borrow the comparable Kajaria metric pack count and must be confirmed. Pattern allowance is editable; herringbone needs a suitable rectangular tile. Notch choice is a quantity reference, not installation approval.

Edit material and labour rates

Illustrative workbook rates, not manufacturer quotations. Grout kg is calculated separately; its cost uses the editable area allowance. Replace that allowance with your product quotation. Adhesive cost uses whole bags including skirting; no separate skirting fixing allowance is added.

Area-based tile estimate, not a cutting layout. Joints do not reduce the tile order. Adhesive and grout use net laid area including skirting, not wasted tile area. Grout excludes handling loss, pack rounding and movement-joint sealant. Budget excludes demolition, screed, waterproofing, repairs, thresholds and special edge polishing.

Worked example: 12 × 10 ft room with 600 × 600 tiles

This room needs 10 boxes (40 tiles), three 20 kg bags of adhesive and about 2 kg of grout, and budgets at about ₹26,046 at the default rates. Inputs: one 3 ft door, 100 mm skirting, 3 mm saw cut, no dado, 10% tile allowance, four tiles per box, 3 mm joints, 8 mm grout depth, grout factor 1.6 and a 6 mm square-notch trowel.

At the default rates, tiles cost 14.4 ÷ 0.09290304 × ₹90 = ₹13,950.03, adhesive costs 3 × 20 × ₹40 = ₹2,400, and the grout material allowance is ₹533.81. Labour is 120 × ₹35 + 41 × ₹25 = ₹5,225; handling is 120 × ₹3 + 41 × ₹2 = ₹442. Keeping full precision until display gives a direct cost of ₹22,550.83, then 10% overheads/profit and 5% contingency give ₹26,046.21. Rounded displayed line items may differ by ₹0.01 when added.

The skirting calculation uses new tile stock and a simple strip yield; it does not assume floor offcuts are reusable. Corners, exposed edges and a cutting plan can change the purchase. The grout formula treats strips as rectangles; perimeter movement joints need their specified sealant separately.

Manufacturer data and editable assumptions

Each default comes from a manufacturer sheet or our tiling workbook, and all are editable. Check your carton and the current data sheet before ordering. Trowel notch size is not the finished adhesive bed thickness.

The 2 × 2 ft and 2 × 4 ft presets use exact imperial sizes, with 4 and 3 pieces per box borrowed from the metric packs; confirm them on the carton. The 100 mm skirting, 3 mm saw cut, 3 mm joint and 8 mm depth are example inputs, not manufacturer requirements.

The tiling cost guide and room-wise tiling BOQ workbook (Excel) use the same rates but different allowances: 5% for dry floors, 10% for wet floors and dado, and 15% for skirting, with adhesive at 0.4 kg/sq ft. This tool starts at 10%, cuts skirting from whole tiles and rounds adhesive to bags, so its totals can differ. The workbook also prices ceramic wall tiles separately at ₹50/sq ft; here a combined run uses one tile price.

How to measure rooms, skirting and wall dado

Measure the net tiled surface: floor area, skirting length and dado area, each on its own.

  1. Measure finished internal room length and breadth. Split an L-shaped floor into rectangles; turn skirting off for artificial rectangles or deduct shared internal edges so their perimeters are not counted as walls.
  2. Subtract only footprints that will actually remain untiled. Use net floor area, not carpet-area paperwork or built-up sale area.
  3. For skirting, take the perimeter less all door widths and walls receiving dado or another finish. Enter the chosen height in millimetres; set it to zero when skirting is not required.
  4. For dado, total the wall lengths at the same tiled height. Deduct actual opening areas and add reveals separately if required. A 5 × 5 ft bathroom with 7 ft dado and one 3 × 7 ft door has 20 × 7 − 21 = 119 sq ft of dado, plus 25 sq ft of floor. When dado runs on every wall, enter the perimeter less door widths (17 ft here) as walls without skirting.
  5. Read the carton dimensions and pieces per box. Pool only the same SKU, shade and batch. Agree the layout, then review the cutting allowance before rounding to boxes.
  6. Check substrate level, adhesive product, trowel notch and grout depth. Request separate quotes for screed, waterproofing, demolition, borders and special cuts.

Common ordering and costing mistakes

  • Calling every 600 mm tile “2 feet” understates metric tile consumption.
  • Applying cutting wastage to adhesive and grout overstates the area being laid. These quantities use net tile faces.
  • Rounding each room to boxes before pooling the same tile can leave avoidable spare cartons.
  • Charging labour on purchased tile area pays for unused tiles. Use net laid area, and running length for skirting.
  • Adding skirting over a wall already measured as dado counts two finishes on the same surface.
  • Using a 6 mm trowel as proof of a 6 mm bed confuses notch size with the compressed adhesive layer.
  • Assuming a published coverage or wastage percentage guarantees the final order ignores uneven surfaces and the actual cut layout.

For comparing finishes, see marble, granite and wooden flooring costs. For a complete finishes register, use BOQ for interior work. The construction calculator library covers paint, plaster, AAC blocks, bricks, concrete, cement and steel.

Frequently asked questions

How many 600 × 600 tiles do I need for a 12 × 10 ft room?

35 tiles, or nine boxes of four, with a 10% cutting allowance. The floor is 120 sq ft (11.148 m²): 11.148 × 1.10 ÷ 0.36 m² per tile = 34.06, rounded up to 35. Add 100 mm skirting cut from the same tile and you need ten boxes (40 tiles).

Is a 2 × 2 ft tile the same as 600 × 600 mm?

Not quite. Exactly 2 ft is 609.6 mm, so a true 2 × 2 ft tile covers 4 sq ft, while a 600 × 600 mm tile covers 0.36 m², about 3.875 sq ft. Shops often call 600 × 600 tiles “2 × 2”. Read the carton dimensions and pick the matching preset.

How many tiles are in one box?

Usually four 600 × 600 mm tiles, or three 600 × 1200 mm or 800 × 800 mm tiles, going by the Kajaria full-body catalogue. Other brands and thicknesses differ, so enter the pieces per box printed on your carton.

What wastage should I use for straight and diagonal tiles?

Start with 10% for straight laying, the allowance in Kajaria’s tile calculator. For diagonal or herringbone the tool starts at 15%, the top of the 5–15% extra-stock range published by Johnson Tiles Australia. Rooms with many cuts can need more; check the laying plan.

How many square feet does one bag of tile adhesive cover?

55–60 sq ft per 20 kg bag with a 6 mm square-notch trowel (average 3 mm bed), per the MYK LATICRETE 335 data sheet. With a 12 mm notch (average 6 mm bed), the 340 sheet gives 33–38 sq ft per 30 kg bag. This tool uses the lower figure in each range. Check back-buttering and the floor condition with the installer.

How is grout quantity calculated?

Grout kg/m² = (tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width) × joint depth × joint width × product factor, with dimensions in mm. Multiply by the laid area. Mapei gives a factor of 1.6 for Ultracolor Plus; other products differ. Skirting is worked out with its strip size. Add handling loss and round to packs yourself.

Can I combine several rooms or add bathroom wall tiles?

Yes. Add rooms with the same tile, shade and batch to pool boxes. For dado, enter total wall lengths, height and opening deductions, and exclude those walls from skirting. If the walls use a different tile or adhesive, run them separately; one run assumes one tile throughout.

Does this include tile laying labour and skirting?

Yes. Editable defaults are ₹35 per sq ft for floor laying, ₹45 per sq ft for walls and ₹25 per running ft for skirting, the example rates in our room-wise tiling workbook (20 October 2026). Materials, handling, 10% overheads and profit, and 5% contingency are shown separately. Replace them with your contractor's rates.

Does joint width change the number of tiles to buy?

No. Joint width changes grout, not the tile order; we do not subtract joint area from tiles. Exact rows, border cuts, movement joints and reusable offcuts need a dimensioned laying plan.
