Review, Certificate and Your Next 90 Days

Ten modules ago, a drawing was just a picture. Now trace what you can do with one: read it, measure it, price it, budget it, procure against it, bill it, and close its account. The capstone exists to prove those are not ten separate skills — they are one pipeline, and every handoff in it is a number that must survive unchanged.

The reconciliation trail — one number, five documents

Follow a single quantity through everything you built. The 43.5 cum of RCC:

And the money-level closure: contract ₹29,20,036 + variations ₹39,870 = final value ₹29,59,906; payments ₹33,44,694 + retention ₹1,47,995 = ₹34,92,689 = value + GST ₹5,32,783. Sanctioned budget ₹30,66,036 closed ₹1,06,130 under. When you can produce this table for a real project, you are doing the job — whatever your visiting card says.

This table is also your dispute file. In the RERA era, construction arguments — owner versus thekedar, buyer versus promoter, contractor versus PMC — are decided by whoever holds the signed, reconciling paper trail. An owner with this file recovers excess payments; a contractor with this file collects his retention; a QS who can build it is worth hiring on either side of the table.

What you can now do, module by module

Run down this list honestly — it is the skill inventory the assessment samples:

  1. Foundations: read a drawing set revision-by-revision, name the estimate type a decision needs, and measure in the units IS 1200 practice expects (half-brick in sq m, full-brick in cum).
  2. Substructure takeoff: centerline method, excavation to a written basis, PCC and footing volumes — the arithmetic behind Anand Villa's ₹2.16 lakh first stage.
  3. Superstructure takeoff: member-wise concrete, shuttering girths, BBS cutting lengths with bend deductions, and the d-squared-by-162 steel table.

  5. Budgeting: stage-wise cost plans that sum back to the BOQ, per-sqft bands with the right denominator (carpet vs built-up), contingency with an approval rule.
  6. Procurement: landed-cost comparative statements, dealer credit arithmetic, and material reconciliation that catches a 9 percent cement variance before it becomes a habit.
  7. Billing and control: cumulative RA bills, retention computed on cumulative gross, deviations versus extra items, and a final account that closes both ways.
  8. Execution and QA: the pre-pour checks that no bill can retrofit, and the quantity leaks (a 10 mm over-thick slab is ₹11,800) that never appear as line items.
  9. Tools: takeoff spreadsheets where every number is a formula tracing to a dimension — and the judgment to audit any tool's output, including AI.

If two or more of these feel shaky, the fix is cheap: each is one module of re-reading, and the assessment links every question back to its module.

The certificate assessment

The course ends with a free certificate assessment:

  • 25 questions, drawn from all ten modules — roughly two to three per module.
  • Calculation-heavy where the course was (takeoff, BBS, rate analysis, budgeting), judgment-based where the course was (procurement, billing discipline, site QA).
  • Pass mark 70 percent — 18 of 25 correct.
  • Every question links back to its module for review; you can retake the assessment after revising. There is no fee and no time limit worth gaming — the point is the checklist in your head, not the PDF.

One honest note: a course certificate opens conversations, not doors. In the Indian market — where a junior QS competes with every civil graduate holding the same degree — what opens doors is the capstone artifact itself: your own takeoff-BOQ-budget-bill set for a real building, with rates from your own city and your own dated quotations. Your next 90 days

Days 1-30 — reproduce. Get one real drawing set (your current site, a friend's house plan, or a plan you request from a local architect). Redo this capstone on it end to end: locked data sheet, takeoff, 20-item BOQ with your city's quoted rates, stage budget. Time-box it: two weekends is enough now that you have the pattern. Deliverable: one spreadsheet, every tab reconciling.

Days 31-60 — calibrate. Build your personal rate book: collect real quotations for the ten materials that drive 80 percent of cost (cement, steel, sand, aggregate, bricks, tiles, paint, wiring, pipes, labour rates), log them with dates, and rebuild five item rates from scratch. Shadow one RA bill cycle at work if you can — ask to check the measurements against the MB, even unofficially. Deliverable: a dated rate book and one bill you have personally verified.

Days 61-90 — own something. Take responsibility for one live artifact: the steel reconciliation on your site, a thekedar's bill check, the quantity takeoff for one upcoming slab cycle. Put your capstone spreadsheet and your real-project version into a simple portfolio. Deliverable: one document a senior has relied on, and a portfolio you can show in an interview.

Common mistakes after finishing a course

  • Collecting certificates instead of artifacts. One reconciled real-project spreadsheet beats five more courses.
  • Waiting for permission to practice. Nobody assigns you your first takeoff; you take one and check it against whatever official number exists.
  • Letting the rate book go stale. Rates dated more than a quarter ago are history, not data — mid-2026 cement at roughly ₹340-460 a bag will not survive the year unchanged.
  • Skipping the site. A QS who never walks the slab they measured will eventually certify concrete that is not there.
