Borewell cost is drilling by depth slab + casing pipe + pump, cable and panel + flushing and yield testing + any applicable permission fee. Add rig transport, installation and the connection to your tank wherever they are outside the quoted scope.
There is no single per-foot price for India. The 300 ft, 6½-inch example below gives ₹27,000–₹39,000 for drilling only, calculated from CivilSite's reported illustrative inputs, updated 8 October 2026. Its assumed 80 ft of casing and completion work are unpriced, so this is not an installed total. Sources follow below.
What goes into borewell cost for a house?#
Build the budget from measured items, then add them. A drilling quotation is incomplete as a house-water budget until the pump and the route to the tank are included.
Total borewell budget = Σ(feet drilled in each slab × that slab's rate) + installed casing length × casing rate + pump and motor + measured cable and delivery pipe + panel + development/flushing + yield test + mobilisation and installation + applicable permissions.
| Component | Quantity and unit to request | What the quotation must identify |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling | Running ft in each depth slab, or metres | Bore diameter, ground conditions, slab boundaries and whether the rate applies only to the extra depth |
| Casing pipe | Installed running ft or metres | Material, nominal size, outside diameter, wall thickness/class, joints and installation |
| Pump and motor | One selected set | Model, duty point, supply phase and installation scope |
| Submersible cable | Measured metres | Cable size, route to the panel and jointing kit |
| Delivery/riser pipe | Measured metres | Diameter, pressure class, joints, valves and route to the tank |
| Starter/control panel | One specified panel | Compatible controls, electrical protection and wiring scope |
| Flushing/development | Agreed job, hours or billable feet | Method, billing basis and what completion means |
| Yield test | One agreed test and written record | Test method, duration, discharge, water-level observations and recovery |
| Mobilisation and installation | Itemised job | Rig access, transport, labour and any separately charged site work |
| Permissions and water-quality testing | Actual applicable fee/test | Authority or laboratory, receipt and contractor's service charge shown separately |
Do not add an item twice when the drilling or installation package already includes it. For the rest of the house, start with the house construction cost calculator and keep the borewell as a separate allowance. A floor-area estimate cannot tell you how deep the water-bearing formation is.
Borewell drilling cost per foot: reported state estimates#
Compare the diameter and scope before comparing the per-foot figure. These are reported publisher estimates, not accepted contractor quotations or verified state averages.
| State | Reported 6½-inch drilling estimate | Source and date shown |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | ₹103/ft | Property.todaypricerates.com, 2026 |
| Karnataka | ₹106/ft | Property.todaypricerates.com, 2026 |
| Andhra Pradesh | ₹107/ft | Property.todaypricerates.com, 2026 |
Each page describes its figures as a borewell cost estimate and separates drilling from estimated casing and site logistics. All three show 2026, without a publication day or month; accessed 26 October 2026. They do not provide a depth-slab schedule for these rates. Obtain a dated local quotation for your ground conditions and inclusions before budgeting from them.
How do depth slabs change drilling cost?#
Price each depth band separately. The state estimates above do not establish slab increments.
CivilSite's borewell guide, updated 8 October 2026, reports illustrative planning inputs, not current quotes. Its reported 6½-inch range starts at ₹90–₹130/ft, adding ₹10–₹20/ft per further 100 ft slab beyond 300 ft. Accessed 26 October 2026.
| Depth band | Rate from reported inputs: low / high |
|---|---|
| First 300 ft | ₹90 / ₹130 per ft |
| Next 100 ft, to 400 ft | ₹100 / ₹150 per ft |
| Next 100 ft, to 500 ft | ₹110 / ₹170 per ft |
Calculated from those reported inputs:
- 300 ft: 300 × ₹90 to 300 × ₹130 = ₹27,000–₹39,000.
- 400 ft: ₹27,000 + 100 × ₹100 to ₹39,000 + 100 × ₹150 = ₹37,000–₹54,000.
- 500 ft: ₹37,000 + 100 × ₹110 to ₹54,000 + 100 × ₹170 = ₹48,000–₹71,000.
These are drilling-only illustrations, not installed totals. Get the contractor's actual bands and charging method in writing.
Does CPWD DSR give a borewell drilling rate?#
Yes, but match the diameter, strata and depth before using it. The 2023 schedule is a historical reference, not a current residential quote.
CPWD DSR 2023, Volume II, subhead 23, items 23.1.1.1 and 23.1.2.1 price 300 mm diameter drilling up to 90 m below ground:
| CPWD DSR 2023 item | Ground | Unit | Schedule rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23.1.1.1 | All types of soil | Metre | ₹707.75 |
| 23.1.2.1 | Rocky strata including boulders | Metre | ₹1,695.10 |
Item 23.1 includes strata sampling, a bore log and the drilling equipment. A 6½-inch hole is 165.1 mm, and 300 ft is 91.44 m. Both diameter and depth differ from these items, so neither rate is used in our worked example. The schedule itself separates deeper drilling under item 23.2.
Borewell casing pipe price: compare the specification first#
Compare casing prices only after matching the pipe and installation scope. A supply-only pipe price cannot be compared directly with a rate that includes joints, lowering and fixing.
One dated reference is CPWD DSR 2023 item 23.3.2: ₹793.25 per metre for 150 mm nominal unplasticized PVC medium well casing (CM), including supply, assembly, lowering, fixing, fittings and associated labour. See DSR 2023 Volume II, item 23.3. This is a historical installed rate, not a current MS or PVC market quote.
We do not apply it to the example below: nominal pipe size alone does not establish that the pipe, joints and required clearance fit a 6½-inch hole. Confirm the casing design, actual outside diameter and whether the upper hole needs enlargement with the driller. Get a dated quote for that exact specification.
Record the lengths actually installed. Casing length follows the formation and well design; it is not automatically equal to total drilled depth. Ask whether the bill covers pipe supplied, pipe installed or both, and account for unused lengths.
Worked example: 300 ft borewell with 80 ft casing#
The reported-input planning range is ₹27,000–₹39,000 for drilling only, using CivilSite's model cited above. It is not a quotation or an installed total.
This is a fictional measurement example dated 26 October 2026. Its requested inputs are a 300 ft drilled depth, 6½-inch bore and 80 ft installed casing. They are costing assumptions, not recommended dimensions or a prediction of water availability. The casing specification and any larger-diameter upper section still need site confirmation.
| Work item | Example quantity | Rate basis | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drilling, first slab | 300 ft | Reported illustrative ₹90–₹130/ft; CivilSite, updated 8 October 2026 | ₹27,000–₹39,000 |
| Further drilling | None in this scenario | Approve a revised depth and slab calculation before continuing | — |
| Casing | 80 ft = 24.384 m, assumed | No verified rate for the final pipe and installation specification | Unpriced |
| Casing-seat enlargement, if required | Length and diameter to be confirmed | Separate scope and quote required | Unpriced |
| Pump and motor | One set, model to be selected after testing | No verified rate for a selected model | Unpriced |
| Cable and delivery pipe | Actual route lengths in metres, to be measured | Size/class and installed rates required | Unpriced |
| Panel and installation | One specified panel plus installation job | Scope and quote required | Unpriced |
| Flushing/development and yield test | Agreed job/test, billing basis to be confirmed | Scope-matched quote required | Unpriced |
| Transport, permissions and water-quality test | Actual applicable jobs/fees/tests | Confirm applicability and obtain dated charges | Unpriced |
| Planning subtotal: drilling only | 300 ft | 300 × ₹90 to 300 × ₹130 | ₹27,000–₹39,000 |
Unpriced does not mean zero. Add the outstanding amounts before approving the project budget. Keep a separate written agreement for stopping work, continuing deeper or abandoning a dry bore; extra depth cannot be assumed to produce water.
Why do depth, rock and water levels change the bill?#
More drilling adds measured length and may enter a higher rate slab. Ground conditions also change the drilling method and the casing required, so two nearby plots need not have the same bill.
Use CGWB's groundwater-level monitoring data and state yearbooks to review nearby observations across seasons. Its publications repository includes state 2024–25 groundwater yearbooks. Choose the latest available local report and check the observation date, location and type of well. CGWB explains that water levels depend on hydrogeology, recharge and extraction.
A recorded depth to water is not a recommended drilling depth. Ask a local groundwater professional to interpret the aquifer information and neighbouring bore logs for your plot. Neither a district average nor the example's depth establishes your casing length, sustainable yield or water quality.
Before the rig arrives, agree who can authorise deeper drilling and how each change will be recorded. Ask for the strata log, water strikes, final depth and a written yield-test record at handover.
Borewell motor and pump cost: what must be measured?#
Price the pump after its duty is specified. We have no dated, specification-matched pump package for this example, so the pump, cable, panel and pipe remain quantities to quote.
Ask the installer to record the measured pumping water level, required discharge, delivery elevation, pipe route and friction allowance, then identify the pump model and duty point on its performance curve. Total drilled depth alone is not enough to select motor power.
Request separate lines for the pump/motor set, riser pipe, submersible cable, joints, panel, valves, electrical work and installation. Measure the cable route to the panel and the delivery route to the tank; do not automatically buy both at the full bore depth.
Use the water tank capacity calculator to plan storage separately. The residential plumbing BOQ guide helps list the building's pipework and fittings. Neither replaces the bore's yield test or pump selection.
Does a house borewell need permission?#
Check the authority responsible for your state and the proposed water use before booking the rig. An individual household exemption should not be assumed to cover an apartment project or construction-stage abstraction.
Paragraph 1.0(i) of the CGWA guidelines notified on 24 September 2020 exempts individual domestic consumers in rural and urban areas from its groundwater-extraction NOC requirement for drinking and domestic use. The original Gazette notification also recognises more stringent state provisions. Consult the CGWA consolidated guidelines incorporating the 29 March 2023 amendments and the current state/local rules for your address and category.
Ask the authority whether registration, drilling permission, restrictions or charges apply, and obtain the applicable fee schedule. We have not verified a permission fee for this fictional site, so none is inserted into the budget. Keep official receipts separate from a contractor's paperwork charge.
How to check the driller's bill#
Reconcile each charged quantity to the agreed rate sheet and the site record. A single total with “borewell work” written beside it does not show what was measured.
| Bill line | Evidence to compare before payment |
|---|---|
| Drilling by slab and diameter | Start/end depths, rod-length tally or agreed measurement record, final bore log and written depth extensions |
| Casing by specification | Installed lengths, pipe markings, joint details, delivery record and unused pipe reconciliation |
| Upper-hole enlargement or extra work | Written approval, measured length/diameter and separately agreed rate |
| Flushing/development | Method, actual hours/feet/job and agreed completion record; check it was not already included |
| Yield testing | Dated discharge and water-level readings, test duration and recovery record |
| Pump, cable, pipe and panel | Model details, installed quantities, invoice, commissioning record and warranty documents |
| Transport and installation | Agreed inclusions and the basis for any extra visit or labour charge |
| Permissions and laboratory testing | Applicable official/laboratory receipts and separately stated service charges |
Keep yield testing and water-quality testing distinct: a flow reading does not establish whether water is suitable for drinking. Ask the laboratory for the appropriate test package rather than judging water by appearance.
For the wider house budget, get a BOQ from your drawings. Send the plumbing layout and the driller's proposed scope with the architectural drawings. Keep borewell depths and unresolved site-dependent items provisional until the relevant measurements and quotations are available.
Frequently asked questions#
The useful comparison is the same measured scope, with the same exclusions. These answers distinguish drilling from a completed installation.
What is borewell cost per feet in India?#
There is no verified national rate. Compare dated local quotations for the same diameter, strata, depth bands and inclusions. The state table reports a publisher's estimates, while the slab example uses illustrative inputs. Neither establishes a local contractor's price or a complete pump-to-tank budget.
How much does a 300 feet borewell cost?#
The example calculates ₹27,000–₹39,000 for drilling only from CivilSite's reported illustrative inputs, updated 8 October 2026. Casing, pump and completion work still need quotes; an installed total is not established.
How much casing pipe does a borewell need?#
The formation and well design determine it. Our 80 ft is an explicit arithmetic assumption, not a rule for houses. Confirm material, diameter, joints and installed length with the driller; the casing may also require a wider upper bore.
Does drilling cost include the borewell motor?#
Only if the written quotation says so and identifies the pump model and installation scope. Treat the motor/pump, cable, panel, riser pipe and connection to the tank as separate items until their inclusion is confirmed.
Can I use the CGWB water level as my drilling depth?#
No. A monitoring observation describes water level at that location and time, not the finished bore design for your plot. Review local aquifer information and bore logs with a groundwater professional, then record the actual drilling and test results.
Is permission free for a residential borewell?#
Do not infer a fee from a NOC exemption. The cited CGWA household exemption concerns drinking and domestic use; state/local requirements and other use categories need checking. Ask the responsible authority for the current rules and any applicable fee before drilling.
